Emotional support after a workplace injury.

How a Workplace Injury Can Affect

Your Emotional Well-Being

Anxiety

A workplace injury can bring constant worry about your health, financial situation, and ability to return to work. Psychotherapy can help you manage anxious thoughts, reduce emotional distress, and regain a sense of control over your daily life.

Sleep Problems

Pain, stress, and worries following a workplace injury can make it difficult to fall asleep or stay asleep. Psychotherapy can help you address the thoughts and emotional difficulties affecting your sleep and develop healthier sleeping habits.

Low Mood

Being unable to work or enjoy activities you once loved can lead to sadness, frustration, and a loss of motivation. Psychotherapy provides support to help you manage these feelings, rebuild confidence, and gradually reconnect with everyday life.

Trauma

A workplace accident or distressing experience can leave lasting emotional effects, including fear, upsetting memories, and anxiety about returning to work. Trauma-informed psychotherapy can help you process these experiences, reduce distressing symptoms, and gradually restore your sense of safety and confidence.

When Workplace Stress Becomes Overwhelming

Workplace injuries aren’t always visible. When severe, chronic stressors or a traumatic event occur on the job, the impact on your nervous system can be profound. You might find yourself experiencing:

  • Constant hypervigilance or dread before starting your workday.

  • Severe sleep disruptions, racing thoughts, or panic attacks.

  • Emotional exhaustion that leaves you feeling completely depleted at home.

When workplace stress reaches this level, it is no longer just a "tough job"—it is a psychological injury.

Many Ontario workers carry this burden alone because they don’t know that the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB) recognizes and funds treatment for work-related mental health conditions. If your job has fundamentally impacted your psychological well-being, the WSIB framework is designed to provide you with the medical care and the professional space you need to step back, heal, and safely rebuild your health.
